I teach my clients how to eat a ‘paleo’ diet – the diet that our bodies were designed to expect. Humans ate ancestral diets for 99.5% of our existence until the food supply dramatically changed with the agricultural revolution. Our genetics have not appreciably changed in the 0.5% of human history since the introduction of grains, refined sugar, industrial oils, food dyes/chemicals/preservatives, soy, dairy, and legumes. Most people are surprised to find that I encourage intake of healthy fats, meat, and fruit. We also include a lot of vegetables, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices, eggs, seafood, poultry, and did I mention bacon?
The ineffectiveness of the conventional “low-fat, high carbohydrate” approach has taken the culture around weight loss to a pretty ugly place. Have you ever felt shamed by a weight loss advertisement or program? That’s what I’m talking about. I was horrified to hear that a program here in the UK actually labels certain (healthy!) foods as 'sins'. Shaming people into under-eating is not a sustainable or life-giving method. How much weight will I lose?
Results will vary but most program participants lose between 1-2 pounds per week, for a total of 7-15 pounds over the 7 weeks. Faster weight loss has been shown to reduce lean muscle mass, and to decrease metabolism in the long run. If you have a lot of weight to lose, you can continue repeating the program meal plans as many times as you like. If you aren’t satisfied with the results you’re getting from the program, please let me know immediately so that I can help you troubleshoot. I also offer a no-questions asked 10-day refund (after you begin the program) if you’re not satisfied.
I'm not quite ready! Do I have to start right away?
No problem, it's important to wait for the right timing. As long as you join before enrollment closes, you can trigger the online program to start when YOU'RE ready. However, I recommend starting as soon as you can, so that you don't lose motivation.
I already did Fat Loss 40, your previous group weight loss program. How is this different?
This program has completely new meal plans, so you’ll get all new recipes, plus more ideas for snacks and breakfast. This new program also has a new group at a lower energy intake than the previous ‘group 1’. We now have an automated email sequence, so that you will get program details at exactly the right time for you. Finally, we’ve re-vamped and updated the weekly lessons to include more resources, tips, and even worksheets. What does it mean that we’re eating an ancestral or paleo diet?
Ancestral or ‘paleo’ foods are simply the foods that humans ate for 99.5% of human history, until the agricultural revolution. The idea behind ancestral diets is that our genetics and physiology are best adapted to thrive on these ‘ancestral’ foods. Research studies have shown that paleo diets significantly improve weight, insulin sensitivity/type II diabetes, and cardiovascular risk factors such as inflammation, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. Most of these studies were less than 3 months in duration!
In short, ancestral diets include meat, poultry, seafood, eggs, vegetables, fruit, nuts, seeds, herbs, spices, and traditional fats, with an importance placed on quality. When you work with a pro, you can do a lot more with that than it may seem. Ancestral diets omit grains, dairy, soy, food chemicals/additives, processed/industrial oils, and refined sugar. Many people can tolerate certain quality forms of dairy, legumes, and some types of grains. We will experiment with this toward the end of the program, and we will also learn more about ancestral diets at the beginning of the program.
Do I have to eat a restrictive diet forever?
I treat ancestral diets like an elimination diet. That means we go fully ‘paleo’ at first, for just 4 weeks. Then, we start to reintroduce additional foods that some people can tolerate, such as quality dairy and legumes/beans. This approach allows you to assess what foods you tolerate best. Ultimately, most people can sustain their health gains and weight loss with ‘80/20’ – eat ‘paleo’ for about 80% of the time, and then indulge around 20% of the time. If you find that you can’t get away with 80/20, I can help you figure out why – and what to do.
How much time will I need to spend cooking?
This program is designed to be achievable for people who work full time, and many people with tight schedules have had success with my weight loss programs. Most dinners are planned to take 30 minutes or less, and most lunches are leftovers or a super-quick salad. Breakfasts should take 5-15 minutes to prepare. Also keep in mind that the shopping lists, meal plans, and recipes save you the time of meal planning. If even that is too much cooking for you, follow the tracking option. You can choose your own paleo-friendly prepared and/or restaurant meals and track your macro intake in accordance with program guidelines.
What if I’m cooking for a whole family?
No problem. The program instructions include guidelines for how to scale up the meal plans for multiple people. Many people have followed my programs while cooking for their families – no big.
Can I complete this program from (insert country) using (insert computer type)?
I practice in the UK and the US, so all recipes and shopping lists include both metric and US measurements. Thus, you can complete it in any country where you have access to a grocery store. If there’s something you can’t find, I help with substitutions as needed. If you are in a rural area, I provide recommendations for places where you can buy less common ingredients online. Program materials are only available in English. Program materials are provided in .pdf format, so as long as you can open a .pdf you’re good – computer, tablet, or smart phone.
Is this course appropriate for guys?
I had the unusual experience of starting out my health education career working with almost exclusively men – mostly military pilots and special forces. Years of experience with this population taught me that many men struggle with body composition and even body image. Unfortunately, though, I find the vast majority of weight loss programs and materials to be marketed towards women. When something actually is marketed to men, I find that it often fails to provide professional, comprehensive, effective advice. Thus, I make a specific effort to make my programs open and accommodating for men. You will not find girl-talk language or images of skinny women measuring their stomachs. This is not a “1200 calorie across the board” program. This program has meal plans and macronutrient goals up to a total intake 2400 kcal per day. Unless you are very large and/or active, this is sufficient for most men to achieve fat loss without over-restricting. I will help you on an individual basis if you have needs even above that level. I have specialized training and a specific interest in sports nutrition, so I can help if you are very active. I have had many male clients in my practice, both in groups and individually, and they have achieved great results. So, please feel welcome to join us.
What if I don't want to lose weight, but I just want to be healthier?
No problem - these meal plans are a great way to kick off the new year with a nutrient-rich, anti-inflammatory diet. If weight loss isn't your goal, you can simply move up to a higher group - I'll explain exactly how to do that in the program.
